Magnetic Creative activities

Magnetic owner and business advisor

It is not only children that can have fun at community events thanks to a new business set up by a Leamington woman.

Pamela Dunsdon has launched Magnetic which organises fun and creative projects, events and workshops for adults.

The writer is already working with Brunswick Healthy Living Centre in Shrubland Street, Leamington, and Warwick Words Writer’s Group in Warwick after gaining help and advice from the Coventry-based Women’s Business Development Agency (WBDA) to set up Magnetic.

She has also set up a 12-month creative writing programme with Mid-Warwickshire Mind which involves weekly creative writing sessions, walks and visits to local places of interest.

Pamela said: “As we get older, sometimes we forget how to have fun, to do something primarily because it is enjoyable. The work that I do enables people to give themselves permission to let go, and try something new.

“Magnetic works with community organisations, festivals and arts venues as well as businesses to provide fun activities for adults.

“That can include music, performance, creative writing and storytelling by sharing activities in an energetic and supportive atmosphere.

“I have been working towards this for the last four years. In that time I have been networking to find out what’s happening in Leamington in the arts world and with community groups.

“I am currently working on bringing together creative activities with gardening workshops by running get-togethers that are based on nature and health. Most recently I have combined a group walk with creative writing. This has proved to be a really popular and enjoyable way of combining a physical activity with a creative way of expressing and recording our thoughts and experiences.

“I am really enjoying running my own business because I get to work with a broad range of interesting people and organisations.”

Pamela, who previously worked at the Royal Society for Arts based in London, has been given one-to-one mentoring, advice and help with funding, training and attending trade fairs by the WBDA.

“Jane Hill is my business mentor and it has been invaluable to be able to go to the same person over a long period of time for advice and help,” the 33-year-old added.

“The support from WBDA has been amazing and she has put me in touch with other people who have provided practical help with IT and funding.”

The Women’s Business Development Agency is part of the newly launched Regional Women’s Enterprise Unit (RWEU) and is part funded by Advantage West Midlands, the DTI’s Small Business Service, and the European Social Fund.

Business adviser Jane Hill said WBDA doesn’t just help women set up businesses, it provides on-going support to help companies grow.

“Pamela’s self-confidence has increased from the initial planning stages to actually starting the business,” she said.

“I helped her to put together a business plan and personal survival budget which was important in Pamela understanding and improving her cash flow.

“I am sure her company will go from strength to strength.”
